Report from Austrian Open 2017

The first stage of the 2017 WFGA Tour was held in beautiful Salzburg (Austria) from April 28th to April 30th. 87 players (70 Men, 17 Women) came from all over the world to kick-off the new FootballGolf season in style!

What a wonderful idea to have the first ever WFGA Christmas Tournament...oh wait...it was already End of April?! A very bad „April Fools“ joke from the weather gods, as the 1st Round of the Doubles competition was held in a Winter Wonderland on Friday. No Christmas Tree, no presents, no Eggnog. Just Snow, heavy footballs and freezing toes all over the place. FootballGolf is a tough sport though and all teams played through the rough weather conditions. Rumour has it, that 2 or 3 players even had fun while doing it.

With a score of 89 kicks (+17) 4 teams (Kelkel/Schölch, Preisinger/Steinmüller, Eibl/Klammer & Olishkevych/Jilek) claimed the top spot in the Men’s Double competition after „Winter Hell“, but could they hold on to it when the sun comes back for the 2nd Round on Sunday? Spoiler Alert: They couldn’t! With an awesome performance Marinus Stadler & Hans Niedermeier, FootballGolf’s version of FC Bayern München, overcame a 3 kicks deficit to take the win with a total of 163 (+19). Simon Bruce & Henrik Söderlund (SWE) secured 2nd place with a play-off win over Oleksandr Olishkevych & Jan Jilek. Sauber Burschen!

In the Women’s Double competition the german combination of Grewing/Rolli was leading the pack out of the snow with 110 kicks (+38), while Bernasova/Reinova from Czech Republic and swedish FootballGolf royalty Edvinges/Nordgren lurking to take the win in a sunny 2nd Round on Sunday. In the end, an 82 kicks (+10) performance on Sunday was enough to win the competition and put the Czech Repbulic on top of the podium. Flanked by Germany (2nd) and Sweden (3rd). Blahopřání dámy!

Anders Bollerup...who else? Who else could’ve won the Austrian Open? Who else could’ve been the only player to finish the tournament below PAR? The „Danish Wizard“ proved once again why most people think of him as the best FootballGolf player in the world today. Only one of his 4 rounds was finished over PAR (+3) and he cruised to a rather „easy“ tournament win with a total of 287 kicks (-1). Even Top players like Marinus Stadler and Ronnie Hansen, with great performances of their own, couldn’t keep up with him and finished 7 kicks behind. Marinus secured 2nd place in a play-off win against Ronnie and won the competition of „human“ players. Austria’s hopes of a Home-Win were crushed early, when Thomas Kirchberger finished his 1st Round with a disappointing result of 82 kicks (+10). He bounced back though and played 3 good rounds (72/76/72) to finish the tournament on a very good 6th place. Tillykke Anders!

Ane Bjerke from Norway was in a league of her own and played circles around the competition to win the Austrian Open with a total of 320 kicks (+32). The 1st Round gave her a comfortable 5 kicks lead over 2nd placed Michala Reinova (CZE) and Ane would never look back again. She played it safe for the rest of the competition and was never really threatend to lose the top spot. Laura Rolli (GER) was the only competitor to come „close“ to her and even managed to beat Ane’s scores in Rounds 2 and 4, but a 9 kicks deficit after Round 1 was too much to overcome. Laura finished 2nd with a total of 328 kicks (+40), while Michala successfully defended 3rd place with 340 kicks (+52) against Newcomer Ulla Hirsch (GER) and Yvonne Becker (GER). Gratulerer Ane!

Altough I will never forgive you for sending us into „Winter Hell“ on Friday, the Austrian Open 2017 was a very well organised tournament by WFGA Board Members Corinna Dörrsam, Bernhard Ebner & Ronnie Hansen. Thank you very much for your commitment and all the hard work you put in to provide the best experience possible for all FootballGolfers. Also a big „Thank you!“ to Hans Klegraefe and his team at Soccerpark Salzburg for hosting the first ever WFGA Austrian Open! Your hospitality was highly appreciated. Looking forward to play this tournament again in 2018!

See you at the Czech Open!
